Plan for the Learning Module

Learner Profile:

This lesson is easily adaptable for learners of a variety of ages and language proficiency levels. Ideally, learners should have some experience using computers to do school work and using the internet to do research, as this module does assume students have at least a basic level of computer literacy. This module will also work better if students have access to a computer at home, and even better if they have their own smartphones onto which they can download the Google Slides app.

The lesson outline in this module has been designed with the following learner profile and learning context in mind:

Context: ESL students at a summer English school in England

Age: 15-17 years old

Proficiency level: upper-intermediate to advanced, between a B2-C1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students will ideally be at what is referred to as B2+, or ‘Strong Vantage’ (Council of Europe, 2001, p. 35).

Other information: Class size varies from 12-16 students per class. Students have come from a variety of backgrounds and are only in England for a few weeks as they study to improve their English as well as learn about British culture. The classes are 2 hour lessons every day from Monday to Friday. Students have access to a computer lab which they can use after class hours if they want to; in addition, many will have brought laptops and smartphones with them from home.
